October 2021
The Saturday first team had a very successful season resulting in promotion to division one of the Fuller’s league. We finished a close second to Roehampton. The 2’s were affected by a number of injuries this year, which meant relying on a more younger players. They performed very well and finished 5th in the strong 3rd division of the Surrey Championship. The 3rd team also had a great season with promotion a possibility on the final weekend. Unfortunately results did not go our way and we finished in an excellent 3rd position. Well done to all involved.
Sunday cricket also went well. The first team had some very good close games winning some and losing some. The younger players continued to improve with a number of impressive performances. The Development team, in our second season, provided adult cricket for youngsters transitioning from the junior set up. The weather badly hit the start of the season but we had a number of very good matches, often fielding up to 9 juniors playing against adults. All opposition were very impressed with how our youngsters performed and see great potential for the future.
The junior section goes from strength to strength. We now have approximately 40 names on a waiting list. We launched Mini Crickets in April. This was a 10 week programme aimed at introducing children aged 3-8 to cricket. It was a huge success with over 40 new members signing up. We hope to split the sessions next season so we are able to allow more boys and girls to join in. The usual Thursday night juniors, for ages 9 upwards, had over 70 attending most weeks. We had league sides at Under 11 and Under 13 x 2 age groups. Both the Under 11’s and Under 13 Yellows won their leagues comfortably and the Under 13 Blues finished a very impressive 3rd. Friendlies were also arranged for Under 10 and Under 15 age groups. Many thanks to Gill and all the coaches and parents who have helped make this such a successful season.
Off the field our chairman, Frank Ford, worked tirelessly to secure the renewal of our Clubmark accreditation. ECB Clubmark is an accreditation scheme for cricket clubs shows that a club is sustainable, well run and provides the right environment for its members. Clubmark accreditation also means your club is recognised as a safe, rewarding and fulfilling place for participants of all ages, as well as assuring parents and carers that they are choosing the right option for their young people. This is also vital when applying for grants and being recognised by Surrey CCC.
We continue to update equipment and facilities at Ruxley Lane. In addition to the 2 new sightscreens we also purchased a new set of covers for the 2nd square and an impressive new electronic scoreboard.
Next season we will be celebrating the centenary of the original club (Wimbledon Park Sports Club). Plans will be put in place over the winter but please get in touch if you would like to be involved or help in any way.
20th July 2020: Good news. We can now start playing matches, albeit with many restrictions. The Saturday league will recommence from 25th July, but in a different league structure for the seven games. Most planned Sunday fixtures will take place. We have arranged quite a few Junior matches for each age group in July and August.
The Junior coaching sessions on Thursday evenings can now be in groups of up to 30 but we plan to keep to the shorter sessions with small groups for now. Please contact Gill Sewell if you want to attend so we can allocate you to a group and check numbers can be covered by our coaches. There are also someone to one coaching sessions available at other times, which need to be pre-booked.
Net sessions can still be booked by contacting EwellCCBookings@gmail.com and both nets can be used at the same time. Sessions are limited to fifty minutes to allow ten minutes for change-over between groups. There are strict hygiene requirements and a member of the committee has to be on site at the time to make sure regulations are followed and provide emergency access to the Clubhouse.
The committee is meeting on-line every fortnight (twice as often as normal) to discuss the current changing situation and will update members as and when the situation changes.
Please check the Club History page as some new articles have been added this year. The latest is:

It is with sadness that we have to report that John Stow, one of our Vice Presidents, passed away on 7th March, aged 89.
John joined Wimbledon Park Athletic Club (see the History page for relationship with Ewell CC) in the early 1950’s. He continued to play for the club until 1993. In his last season he played in 5 matches, bowling 20 overs for only 57 runs and taking 4 wickets. His best performance that year was 2 for 7; not bad for someone at 65.
In the years after he stopped playing, he would regularly visit the Saturday league games, to watch some of the game and chat to the players; this was whether the game was at home or away. We last saw John last summer when his son, Paul, brought him down to the Chairman’s day.
Our sympathies go to Paul, Ian (Animal) and Jane.
